Dr. Massimo Maggiari
Professor of Italian
Dr. Massimo Maggiari was born in Genova-Nervi and teaches Italian language and cultural studies at the College of Charleston. He has contributed essays, interviews and reviews to various journals of Italian Studies in Italy and in the United States.
He dedicated many years to the study of Arturo Onofri’s poetic work and published the essay Cosmo e archetipi nella poesia di Arturo Onofri (Caramanica, 1998). Recently, he published Il respiro della rosa. Guida ai versi che fanno anima (Agorà, 2015). This book is a critical and creative analysis of Italian Orphic Poetry through the lens of Jungian psychology.
His first collection of poems was entitled Terre lontane/Lands Away (Campanotto, 1999). His second book of verses Aurora Borealis received great recognition in Italy and abroad (Agorà, 2001 - La Finestra 2004).
In 2001, he was the winner of an important poetry competition “La poesia incontra” (RAI 1) with a reading of poems dedicated to the explorer Roald Amundsen.
Since 2006, he started writing about the Great North in prose. First he published Dalle terre del Nord. Alla ricerca dell’anima artica (Vivalda, 2008). Followed by Passaggio a nord-ovest. Sulle tracce di Amundsen (Alpine Books, 2014). Both books were well received and reviewed by national newspapers. Passaggio a nord-ovest is at its 3rd edition.
Today Dr. Maggiari’s research and creative writing address Arctic issues and exploration, analyzing logbooks of European (including Italian) explorers. He focuses on how these explorers interacted with indigenous people, mainly the Inuit. The narrative that results from his works is of great interest because it shows the complex dynamics of cooperation and cultural exchange, working in a context where survival is at stake.
